FOOD

Just like any living being, food is fundamental to the growth and life of the amazon parrot. The wild parrot has a diet based on fruits, vegetables, a variety of seeds, and nuts. If you choose to have this species as a companion you must take into account that you have to provide it with enough nutrients to keep it healthy and the best way is to feed it based on a natural diet as much as possible. You must take into account the size of your parrot to give it the right amount of food, try to keep in ⅓ or ½ of a cup to control their diet, and thus prevent obesity.

You can give him special seed bird food but at a very moderate amount and make sure it is free of harmful chemicals and be as natural as possible, because if they are too artificial you can put his health at risk and you can compromise him. The best thing you can do is to feed him a diet based on fresh fruits such as apples, grapes, melons, papayas, kiwi, among others. Vegetables should certainly be included in their diet and like more carrots, watercress, peas, spinach, sweet potatoes, and many more. You must take into account that the seeds and nuts are high in fat for the parrots, you can give them as prizes or treats and to be a minimum amount and controlled, avoid giving them peanuts because it can be something harmful to their health and if you get to feed them it should be very reduced and not frequent. Also, your bird needs minerals and calcium so you should make sure it has a calcium stone to peck or you could also put a mixture of oyster shells, red stone, charcoal, and fine gravel. And most importantly, always leave a bowl of clean and fresh water for your bird every day.

CARE/HEALTH

To keep your amazon parrot healthy you must make sure to give it all the care it deserves as birds because of their nature like to have their space, flying, and having their healthy lifestyle. The main thing is to give him a bird cage that is large enough to have their own space and we recommend that it is a minimum of cage size should be 24 inches by 36 inches and 48 inches tall with bar spacing of 3/4 to 1 inch, the bigger the cage is, it is better. Take into account that the space required for their cage should allow them to extend their wings completely without rubbing against the bars and be able to move them freely. You should always keep it clean, safe, and durable, and not made of toxic materials that could put their health at risk. Keep in mind that you must always make sure that your bird is kept at a good temperature and that it never goes below 14 degrees and cannot be exposed to high temperatures either.

You should make sure that it stays entertained and you can provide it with toys that are suitable for birds, ropes with knots, perches, or wooden sticks of various sizes and textures, some large stones that can help it to keep its toenails. Just try to keep the perches away from food and water dishes to avoid contamination or dirt. You should always keep the cages with access to natural light and as any bird likes to fly, so take it out of its cage daily and let it fly indoors so they can do some exercise and at least give it 3 hours out of its cage to burn excess calories and at the same time know the environment of the home but you should always be very careful and you should watch it because accidents can happen as it is intoxicated, electrocution, if you have other pets avoid attacking it or even drowning, on the other hand, make sure that if you let it fly indoors you can also do it in a safe room away from these risks and you can be more relaxed.

As mentioned, the Amazon parrots have a very high life expectancy, but in turn, you have to keep an eye on their health. One of the diseases most likely to develop this species are respiratory infections in the lungs, due to bacteria or fungi, which can be fatal for them and can be caused by lack of cleaning in their cages or lack of water change, producing fungi and leading to these complications, if you realize that your parrot is having difficulty breathing, you should go at once to the vet so it can be treated in time. Amazon parrots also tend to develop the fatty liver disease due to obesity generated by poor nutrition and continuous confinement without being able to move freely, resulting in the liver being involved in fat retention affecting their health, where it can also develop tumors that can reduce their life expectancy. Another one that is concurred in these birds is Psittacosis, also called parrot fever, an infection caused by chlamydia bacteria. Also, this pet bird can develop foot necrosis, rhinitis, sinusitis, enteritis, or even malnutrition. Be sure to take your pet parrot to an avian veterinarian every 6 months for a check-up and to have it fully checked and vaccinated if necessary. Remember that to become the best parrot owner for your new pet bird all you need is the disposition and dedication since all of the information you may need if you are new into this is to ask preferably to experts to avoid any issues at home and even with some neighbors since they can become such a loud and problematic pet from bad management and could even resource to feather picking they aren’t satisfied or are simply unhappy, hopefully, you can notice this change on his behavior every time you clean up his cage and you see an odd feather amount on the floor before it becomes worst over time.

BREED

If you decide to buy one of these amazing birds, make sure it is from a reputable breeder or adopt it, always keep in mind that the bird you want to choose must be alert, active, and give you signs of good health, such as bright eyes, a clean and shiny plumage. You should ask for full information about where the parrot comes from and how it was raised.

I recommend that if you do bring a parrot, it is better to bring a mate or partner and establish a group living arrangement so they can grow up together. Try to have them when they are young so they can bond with each other and with the breeder. In their original habitat as wild parrots, these birds for mating performed the nuptial dances, gathered and mated. Then they would fly off to build their families. The female lays 2 or 3 eggs at intervals of days and stays to incubate them, while the male takes care of the food so that the mother does not have to leave the nest. The last 4 weeks to hatch, their feathers appear after 6 or 8 weeks, and until they can take care of themselves they receive their meals and are cared for by their parents.

If you chose to have an amazon parrot is a good decision, you will not be bored of him and especially because they are talkative and love to repeat everything, but you have to take responsibility for what is to take care of this type of bird and more in their mental health because they come to live for many years, your bird will create a special bond with you and can be together for many decades.
