History

When people read or hear the word “bobtail” they immediately think of the Japanese bobtail, but in the United States you can find a breed that is very recently called American Bobtail, and it has nothing to do with Japanese. This breed was founded in the ‘60s where the Sanders family was on a family vacation in the state of Arizona and they noticed a brown lynx-like short-tailed tabby cat and decided to take it with them to the state of Iowa where they live since they were fascinated with the personality of this feline, naming their new pet Yodie.  The ancestry of this cat is completely unknown but it is believed that because of its appearance it arose naturally between a hybrid domestic and wild bobcat due to its short and thick tail. Being in a new home with other cats, Yodie got paired with a Siamese cat where kittens were born with short tails predominating the Yodie gene, so it attracted a lot of attention because Siamese has no history of having short tails. A friend of this couple called Mindy was fascinated with this new breed so she decided to start the first breeding program by giving the name American Bobtail. Later this bobtail was crossed with Himalayan, Burmese, Birman, and Siamese cats

In 1970 Mindy was the first one to establish the first breed standards, but due to the great variety of crosses her gene pool was extended a lot and the main characteristic of what was the American Bobtail started to be lost, they were long-haired, short-haired and a great variety of colors, so some cat breeders decided to dedicate themselves to a bobtail breeding program to define the breed standard, starting a selective breeding system and looking for their recognition. Until 1989 The International Cat Association (TICA) accepted the American Bobtail cat in the new breed category and it was not until 2002 that it achieved full recognition. It was also recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) and the American Cat Fanciers Association (ACFA).

This cat has a high life expectancy between 12 and 21 years, so you will have this partner for a long time if you give him the necessary care. It’s a medium-large sized cat where both sexes can measure between 13 and 15 inches, but in weight, the male can weigh about 13 to 19 lbs and the female about 11 to 17 lbs. His head is in proportion to his body, it’s wide and rounded; his eyes are almond-shaped, well defined, and medium-sized, can be of all colors but different colors in each eye are not accepted, they must be equal in both. Its nose is extensive and slightly sloping, connected to strong cheeks and chin, with a slightly wider than the long muzzle of triangular shape. Its ears are of medium size, of a triangular form of wide bases with rounded and standing up tips, with certain hair locks sticking out from its ear, also known as lynx tips.

Its body is robust and well-formed muscles are longer than tall, has a deep and wide chest, keeping almost the same width to the hips, in a rectangular shape. Its legs are well developed with good muscles and with strength; its hind legs are slightly longer than the front ones. It’s tail that is the most outstanding and for what it is known in this cat is short, it has to measure enough to be recognized visually and be separated from the back, but it cannot be so long either, it should not reach the size of the hind legs, its tail is wide from the base to the tip, it can be slightly curved or twisted and straight. His stubby tail should be aligned from the top of the hip and should be strong and hard to the touch, should not be fragile. A fact to know is that kittens at birth may have them shorter than normal but should not be completely tailless, this also happens with the Manx cat.

The coat of the American Bobtail cat breed has a sub coat and an external coat and has two recognized types of length in its coat and they are shorthaired and longhaired. The bobtail shorthaired has a hard outer coat of short/medium length and a soft undercoat, and depending on the coat style can be softer than others. The longhaired bobtail is recognized for having a long hair collar that protrudes around the neck and draws a lot of attention, where the long coat shows more on the top of the back of its hind legs, belly, and tail. Due to the variety of its genetics, all colors and patterns are accepted in this breed.

He gets along very well with family and kids including other pets even if they are dogs, but it is always good to socialize since a kitten. He can tolerate time alone, they are somewhat independent, so they can enjoy some time alone and rest when they want, but that doesn’t mean that you neglect him for many hours and you should still leave him a lot of games that allow him to stay distracted. They don’t have to be very vocal, but they can express it with their purring or in other ways. Don’t forget to give him his dose of love and time together every day, he will appreciate it very much and you will be able to keep many memories together.

Care and Health

The  American Bobtail breed care is the same as any other cat, do a couple of brushes a week to remove its dead coat. Also, to stimulate its skin when it is molting season try to brush it more continuously to avoid seeing loose hair everywhere and to avoid making hairballs,  and bathe it every couple of months, or only when you see it very dirty using shampoo especially for cats that do not have chemicals that harm it. Keep their eyes and ears clean by using special cat products or a slightly wet gauze applied very gently to avoid discomfort or injury. You should be aware of their oral hygiene, American Bobtails have generally good teeth but you can brush their teeth twice a week with a toothbrush and special toothpaste for cats, their oral health is very important because this way you can prevent dental disease.  Always leave a clean litter box within reach if he spends a lot of time indoors, changing it regularly to avoid bad smells. Keep in mind that stimulating your cat to be active is very important, like any other cat that has a lot of energy-giving her a sedentary life that is just eating, slacking off, and no motivation can cause depression, stress, and develop overweight to the point of being a diabetic cat.

As his health is also known in the American bobtail to live many years and not suffer any disease, is a very healthy cat but like any other cat can get to suffer some conditions like periodontal disease, others infections, but everything also depends on the type of care you give him. As one of the diseases this cat could have is hyp dysplasia, which is an Inherited disease that makes the hip bone doesn’t fit with the femur, causing wear and joint pain. Then, if you see your cat limping, or acting like an old cat, or something strange in their walking you should go to the vet as soon as you can as with any other changes in their behavior. Also, some American Bobtails often have problems at the spine level due to a genetic mutation that makes them have a shortened tail.

Feeding

Feeding is essential for any animal, its feed must be of the best quality and you can vary between wet and dry food. It is also advisable to ask your breeder or veterinarian what type of food is best for your pet, and how much you should give him/her, since it also depends on the age, weight, and physical activity your cat is carrying. It is always important to have a balanced and healthy diet for kittens so that it can develop well to avoid any type of illness, also to keep its coat healthy and wear that bright color is base on which kind of food it receives. Also keep in mind that if your cat doesn’t have an active life, is lazy and you don’t stimulate it to any physical activity it can develop obesity, along with entrance and possibly depression, so it depends on you how you want your new companion to live and take their lifestyle. Don’t forget also to leave him his plate of clean, freshwater every day.
